Ore Train between Desert and Atlantic
Nouadhibou Region, Mauritania
Ore Train between Desert and Atlantic is an original illustration set in Nouadhibou Region, Mauritania. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is hot desert — evaporation far outruns rainfall.
An extraordinarily long line of black open ore wagons crosses a pale coastal desert, stretching from the rocky foreground almost to the horizon. Cream dunes and windblown sand surround the track, scattered dark outcrops break the otherwise open surface, and a cool blue Atlantic haze softens the distant edge of the Sahara. Human settlement is barely visible beside the industrial scale of the train.
Why is an ore train in the desert this extraordinarily long?
The wagons are open because iron ore is a dense, durable bulk cargo that can be loaded rapidly without enclosed cars, and the train is exceptionally long because each remote desert journey must move as much material as possible. Sand drifts across the corridor because vegetation is too sparse to anchor it, while the coastal haze forms where moist marine air meets the dry desert margin. An immense ore consist running between Saharan dunes and the Atlantic is the defining transport landscape of the railway approaching Nouadhibou, Mauritania.
