Fennec Fox among Saharan Dunes
Central Algerian Sahara
Fennec Fox among Saharan Dunes is an original illustration set in Central Algerian Sahara. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is hot desert — evaporation far outruns rainfall.
A small fox pauses on the crest of a wind-rippled dune at cool dawn, its oversized triangular ears, compact cream body and dark eyes clear against the sand. Ripple lines run across the crest, and the low light is soft and pink.
Why does the fennec fox have such enormous ears?
The ears are radiators — they dump body heat and pick up the sound of insects moving under sand. Everything else is scaled down to reduce surface area losing water, and the pale coat reflects. Being out at dawn rather than midday is the same strategy in behaviour. This is the smallest canid on Earth, built entirely around a hot desert.

Part of Animals as location clues — An animal is a range map you can see — but the body is a better clue than the name.
