Arabica coffee is native to these moist highland forests, where elevation moderates tropical heat and the tree canopy shelters the understory from intense sun. Shrubs scattered beneath larger trees therefore show a forest habitat rather than a plantation planted in rows. The raised bed brings harvested cherries into an open patch, where sunlight and circulating air help dry them above the damp ground. This combination of wild coffee habitat and small-scale processing connects the scene to the Kaffa highlands of southwestern Ethiopia.
