Toy Train through Tea Hills
Darjeeling Hills, India
Toy Train through Tea Hills is an original illustration set in Darjeeling Hills, India. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is subtropical highland — dry winters, mild summers.
A tiny blue steam locomotive pulls two short carriages around a tight hillside loop through dense green tea gardens. Rows of clipped bushes contour every usable slope, corrugated-roof houses perch beside the track, and pale steam merges with banks of humid cloud drifting across layered Himalayan foothills. The railway appears almost woven into the farms and settlement rather than separated from them.
Why is this hill railway's track so exceptionally narrow?
The track is exceptionally narrow because the line had to turn repeatedly while gaining height on slopes too confined for conventional railway curves. Loops and reverses lengthen the climb, allowing a small locomotive to negotiate the gradient without a vast engineered corridor. Tea covers the hills because warm monsoon moisture, acidic upland soils and frequent cloud protect tender leaves from harsh heat. That combination of a miniature steam railway, intimate roadside alignment and tea-planted Himalayan slopes belongs to the Darjeeling Hills.

Part of Railways and terrain — A railway cannot argue with a gradient, so its alignment is a survey of the terrain it crosses.
