A Church Carved Down into Lalibela's Rock

A Church Carved Down into Lalibela's Rock is an original illustration set in Biete Ghiorgis, Lalibela, Ethiopia. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is subtropical highland — dry winters, mild summers.

Biete Ghiorgis appears below ground as a single cross-shaped red-brown stone church isolated inside a deep rectangular trench. Narrow ceremonial passages and drainage channels cut through the surrounding rock, a few white-robed pilgrims provide scale, and round thatched tukul houses dot the dry green Ethiopian highland beyond.

Why was this church carved downward as one block instead of built upward?

Workers began at the surface and removed rock around one central block, then carved doors, windows and interior rooms into that remaining mass. Working downward produced a monolithic church without transported masonry and let the trench act as both sacred enclosure and circulation route. Channels are essential because seasonal highland rain would otherwise collect around the sunken structure, while nearby round houses show that the carved sanctuary remains embedded in a living pilgrimage landscape rather than an isolated ruin.
