Nor'wester Arch over Farmland — original illustration of Mid Canterbury Plains, New Zealand

Nor'wester Arch over Farmland is an original illustration set in Mid Canterbury Plains, New Zealand. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.

A smooth white cloud arch stretches in one continuous band above golden fields and dark shelterbelts, with the snow-tipped Southern Alps visible beneath its raised edge. Dust lifts from a farm track, poplars bend in the same direction, and bright dry light contrasts with dense cloud spilling over the distant divide.

Why does a long smooth cloud arch form east of the Southern Alps?

Because moist westerly air rises over the Southern Alps, it cools and forms cloud on the windward side, then descends warmer and drier across Canterbury. A standing wave can hold the long arch cloud nearly fixed while strong föhn wind races beneath it. The aligned trees, dusty plains, mountain barrier, and smooth stationary cloud therefore reveal the regional nor'wester rather than an approaching front.
