Tidal Stilt Houses
Castro, Chiloé, Chile
Tidal Stilt Houses is an original illustration set in Castro, Chiloé, Chile. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.
Rows of narrow, brightly painted wooden houses line a sheltered inlet, with their rear rooms extended over mud and shallow water on tall timber stilts. Corrugated roofs glisten under a cool maritime sky, small boats rest near exposed tidal flats, and forested hills rise behind the compact waterfront town.
Why do colorful timber homes stand on posts above a tidal shore?
Because Chiloé's protected channels experience regular tides, stilts let buildings occupy the changing edge without requiring a massive reclaimed embankment, while allowing boats and working access at higher water. Abundant regional timber shaped lightweight walls and piles, and steep metal-clad roofs respond to frequent rain. The combination of saturated wooden façades, tidal mud, small craft, and a damp green island backdrop therefore points to Castro's palafito tradition.
