Wind-Pruned Coastal Scrub
Southwest Tasmania, Australia
Wind-Pruned Coastal Scrub is an original illustration set in Southwest Tasmania, Australia. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.
Dense coastal shrubs form low rounded mats with every branch swept inland, leaving the seaward side clipped and the sheltered side trailing across dark peat. Pale button grass fills gaps, quartzite headlands step into a rough Southern Ocean, and fast grey cloud emphasizes the exposed treeless coast.
Why does coastal scrub grow in low streamlines above this wild ocean?
Because persistent westerlies from the Southern Ocean combine salt spray, mechanical abrasion, and rapid moisture loss, upright shoots are repeatedly damaged while protected growth survives close to the ground. Waterlogged acidic soils also restrict roots and favor hardy heath over tall forest. The shared inland lean, sculpted canopy, peat, and storm-battered headlands therefore record Tasmania's exceptionally exposed southwest coast.
