Rust-red desert cliffs and pale dunes end abruptly at a cold blue Pacific. Sea lions rest on dark wave-cut rocks, dense seabird colonies whiten offshore islets with guano, and almost no terrestrial vegetation appears anywhere along the exposed coast.

Why does a barren desert coast support crowded colonies of marine life?

The Humboldt Current brings cold, nutrient-rich water northward and coastal upwelling feeds enormous stocks of fish, supporting seabirds and marine mammals. The same cold ocean stabilizes the lower atmosphere, suppressing rain and helping create one of Earth's driest coasts. A biologically rich sea pressed against bare desert, plus guano-coated islands, is therefore a powerful clue to the Peruvian coast near Paracas.
