A prickly-pear cactus stands at one edge, and a modest farmhouse sits among the terraces. The light comes in low and warm from one side, throwing shadows down the hillside.

Why is citrus grown on terraces?

Citrus is frost-sensitive and thirsty; growing it on terraces means the water has to be managed rather than merely received. That combination — hot dry summers, mild wet winters, irrigation — narrows the possibilities sharply. Prickly pear is a New World plant long naturalised across the Mediterranean, so its presence marks the region rather than the continent. The stone terracing says the slope was worth the labour.
