Why are covered bridges roofed?

Roofing a bridge protects the timber trusses from rot, which is worth the cost where winters are long and wet — the deck was never the point. Maples turning this intensely need warm days and cold nights in sequence, a narrow autumn window that occurs in humid continental climates.
