Great Tidal Flats

Great Tidal Flats is an original illustration set in Bay of Fundy, Canada. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is warm-summer humid continental.

Fishing boats stand upright on exposed red mudflats, resting on wooden props. Wharf posts show a high-tide waterline far above head height. A muddy channel winds out toward distant water, and the summer evening light is soft.

Why is the tidal range here so extreme?

The gap between the boats on the mud and the waterline on the posts is the tidal range, and a range that extreme happens only where a funnel-shaped bay resonates with the ocean's natural tidal rhythm. The props are how a working fleet copes: boats simply sit down twice a day. Red mud is iron-rich sandstone eroded and redeposited.
