Cone-Roofed Stone Huts is an original illustration set in Puglia, Italy. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is mediterranean — hot dry summers, wet winters.

Whitewashed houses stand under grey dry-stone cone roofs topped with small stone finials. Concentric ring courses of flat stones are visible on each cone. A low dry-stone wall runs along the lane, and the early summer evening light is warm and soft.

Why are these stone cones built without mortar or timber?

Each cone is corbelled — every ring of stones set slightly inward until they meet, needing no mortar and no timber. That method belongs to a place with abundant flat limestone and almost no usable wood. Whitewash reflects summer heat; the thick stone holds the night's cool. The walls around the fields are the same stone, cleared to make the ground workable.
