A stepped cobbled lane climbs gently between whitewashed lime-plaster walls, framed by a plastered archway. Cobalt-blue doors and shutters punctuate the white; a small octopus hangs to dry, and potted geraniums crowd a doorstep. The paving joints are painted white as well, so the whole lane reads as one bright surface under a hard midday sun.

Why are the walls lime-washed white?

Lime-washing walls is a heat strategy before it is an aesthetic one: white reflects the summer sun and lime resists damp. Flat-to-low roofs and small windows point the same way — a climate with fierce dry summers and mild wet winters. The octopus drying in open air, the stepped lane too narrow for a vehicle, and the dense whitewashed cluster all belong to an Aegean island village.
