Honeycomb Coast Rock
Mediterranean Granite Coast
Honeycomb Coast Rock is an original illustration set in Mediterranean Granite Coast. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is mediterranean — hot dry summers, wet winters.
A large granite face is covered in clustered rounded cavities, from coin-sized pits to shallow bowls. Rounded pink-grey boulders line a quiet cove. Low aromatic scrub grows bent away from the water, and the sea is calm under bright, dry light.
Why does rock weather into a honeycomb of hollows?
Honeycomb weathering happens where salt spray soaks into porous rock, then crystallises as it dries and prises the grains apart from inside. It needs sea salt, strong sun and long dry spells — which is why it clusters on the windward faces and not the sheltered ones. Aromatic scrub with small hard leaves, permanently wind-shaped, is the vegetation of a hot-summer, wet-winter coast.
