Wind Ripple Sea
Rub al Khali Sand Sea
Wind Ripple Sea is an original illustration set in Rub al Khali Sand Sea. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is hot desert — evaporation far outruns rainfall.
Hundreds of evenly spaced parallel ripples cover every sand surface, each with a gentle ramp on one side and a sharp edge on the other. The ripple lines bend around a single half-buried dark pebble. One larger dune crest carries the same pattern at bigger scale.
Why are sand ripples spaced so regularly?
Ripple spacing is set by how far a bouncing sand grain travels before it lands — a distance the wind fixes, which is why the spacing is so regular. The asymmetry gives the wind direction. The bend around the pebble is the tell that this is wind and not water: the pattern deforms around an obstacle and reforms downwind, at the same scale, immediately.
