Rime Ice Riverbank

Rime Ice Riverbank is an original illustration set in Songhua River, Northeast China. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is monsoon-influenced hot-summer continental.

Willow trees stand with every fine twig sheathed in feathery white ice, whole crowns turned silver. Flat bands of steam rise off unfrozen water beside them. The riverbank is hard and bare, and the clear morning light is brutally cold.

Why does rime build into feathers instead of coating like frost?

Rime forms when supercooled fog droplets freeze on contact with a surface, building outward into feathers rather than coating like frost — it needs fog, wind and air well below freezing at once. The steam explains the fog: water still liquid in air that cold releases vapour that condenses instantly. Something is keeping this river from freezing.
