A broad stone wall climbs and dips over wooded ridges, with crenellated parapets and square watchtowers repeating into the distance. A steep stairway leads through the nearest tower, while successive blue-green mountain folds make the wall look small against the landscape.

Why does this fortified wall follow the crests of steep mountain ridges?

Following ridge crests gave defenders a wide view and made attackers climb exposed slopes before reaching the wall. Towers divided the route into positions for observation, shelter, and communication, while stairs kept the passage usable where the ridge steepened. The continuous masonry defenses adapting to rugged wooded uplands identify the Ming-era mountain sections of the Great Wall near Beijing.
