Curved-Eave Courtyard

Curved-Eave Courtyard is an original illustration set in Central Korea. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is monsoon-influenced hot-summer continental.

A wooden house sits under dark curved tile roofs whose eave corners lift in a gentle arc. A stone platform beside it is crowded with big glossy brown fermentation jars catching the sun. A low wall encloses the courtyard, and the autumn light is clear.

Why does the eave curve upward at the corner?

The lifted eave sheds heavy summer rain well clear of the wall while still letting low winter sun reach inside — one curve doing two seasons' work. The jars are a food-storage technology built around a climate with a hard winter: ferment in autumn, keep through the cold, and set the jars where the sun reaches them.
