Wind-Shaped Forest inside the Clouds
Monteverde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica
Wind-Shaped Forest inside the Clouds is an original illustration set in Monteverde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.
Short, wind-bent trees form a broken canopy along a narrow mountain divide, every trunk and branch thick with moss, bromeliads, orchids, and hanging ferns. Fast gray cloud streams through the crowns, droplets collect on leaves, and taller straighter forest descends into the sheltered valley only a short distance away.
Why are ridge-top trees short, twisted, and loaded with moss in the tropics?
Moist trade winds are forced upward over the Tilarán divide, cooling into frequent cloud that delivers horizontal fog water directly to exposed vegetation. The same persistent wind limits tree height and twists crowns, while constant wet surfaces allow epiphytes to accumulate and store water high above the soil; sheltered slopes support taller trees. Because that sharp contrast requires cloud immersion, strong ridge exposure, and immediate leeward shelter, it narrows the scene to Monteverde rather than tropical latitude alone.
