Inca Terraces on a Cloud-Forest Ridge
Machu Picchu, Cusco Region, Peru
Inca Terraces on a Cloud-Forest Ridge is an original illustration set in Machu Picchu, Cusco Region, Peru. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.
Dry-fitted gray walls and bright green terraces step along a narrow ridge beneath the sharp peak of Huayna Picchu. Roofless compounds surround small plazas, a stone stair climbs between agricultural bands, and cloud forest drops abruptly into deep valleys on both sides.
Why is this stone city fitted so tightly to a steep mountain ridge?
Inca builders divided the ridge into agricultural, residential and ceremonial zones while using terraces to create level ground, control runoff and stabilize steep slopes. Precisely fitted stone resisted intense rainfall and seismic movement, and channels carried spring water through the settlement. Architecture follows the mountain rather than flattening it, so the ridge, retaining walls and ordered stone precincts form one integrated high-Andean system.
