Araucaria Grassland

Araucaria Grassland is an original illustration set in Southern Brazilian Highlands. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.

A tall straight trunk is topped by widely spaced upward-curving limbs forming a flat candelabra crown. Several younger, narrower trees stand on the ridge lines behind. Rolling humid grassland runs between them under clear spring light.

Why is the crown held flat on top of a bare trunk?

The flat crown held high on a bare trunk is an ancient conifer form that predates flowering trees — the branches are shed from below as the tree rises. Trees standing scattered in grassland rather than closed forest mark a boundary zone where fire and frost keep the grass and only fire-tolerant trees persist. Humid, cool and high is exactly that margin.
