Painted Thatch Village is an original illustration set in Lesotho Highlands. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is subtropical highland — dry winters, mild summers.

Round stone huts with conical thatched roofs stand in a village, their walls painted in bold geometric patterns. A herder wrapped in a thick patterned blanket walks between them. Golden grass covers the high ground under thin, crisp autumn air.

Why is the hut a cone set on a cylinder?

A cone on a cylinder is the strongest shape available in thatch and stone without timber trusses, and it sheds both rain and wind from any direction. Thick blankets worn as outerwear all day tell you the temperature swing: high altitude at this latitude means hot sun and near-freezing nights. Golden grass places it after the summer rains.
