Coastal Train below a Cloudy Pass
Hai Van Pass, Vietnam
Coastal Train below a Cloudy Pass is an original illustration set in Hai Van Pass, Vietnam. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is tropical monsoon — a short drier season inside a wet year.
A blue passenger train curves around a steep forested headland above a pale crescent beach and clear tropical sea. Dense broadleaf vegetation covers the slope almost to the track, wet rock cuttings rise on the inland side, and humid cloud wraps the ridge where mountains meet the coast. The railway occupies a thin shelf between deep water and the abrupt green relief.
Why does the railway hug the headland instead of going inland?
The line hugs the headland because central Vietnam's coastal plain pinches out where the mountains reach the sea, leaving no flat inland route. Curves and cuttings let the railway maintain a manageable grade around the slope rather than climb directly over the ridge. Moist monsoon air is forced upward against the pass, which creates persistent cloud and supports the dense evergreen vegetation despite the exposed coastal setting. This compression of railway, jungle-clad mountain and tropical shoreline defines Hai Van Pass.

Part of Railways and terrain — A railway cannot argue with a gradient, so its alignment is a survey of the terrain it crosses.
