Vegetable Beds Floating through the Monsoon
Barisal Floodplains, Bangladesh
Vegetable Beds Floating through the Monsoon is an original illustration set in Barisal Floodplains, Bangladesh. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is tropical monsoon — a short drier season inside a wet year.
Long buoyant beds covered with gourds, okra, leafy greens, and seedling trays float in a broad monsoon floodplain. Farmers work from narrow wooden boats, layering cut water hyacinth onto a new raft, while half-submerged rice stubble, palms, and raised homesteads show that ordinary fields lie underwater.
Why are vegetables growing on long rafts instead of in the flooded soil?
Where monsoon water covers the land for months, farmers stack water hyacinth and crop residues into thick rafts that rise and fall with the flood. The decomposing plants provide both buoyancy and compost, so vegetables can grow without dry soil; after the water recedes, the spent beds enrich winter fields. That seasonal recycling of an invasive aquatic plant into floating farmland is a distinctive adaptation of south-central Bangladesh.
