Cloud Forest on the Andean Escarpment is an original illustration set in Yungas of Bolivia. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.

A knife-edged road clings to a nearly vertical green mountainside above a deep ravine. Tree ferns and epiphyte-laden trunks fill the foreground, thin waterfalls drop from cloud-wrapped cliffs, and a few small coffee plots interrupt the dense forest on gentler ledges.

Why does a narrow road cross such a wet forest on the steep eastern face of the Andes?

Moist Amazonian air is forced upward against the eastern Andes, cooling into persistent cloud and heavy rain on the Yungas escarpment. The steep relief produces waterfalls, landslides, and very limited level ground, while warm mid-elevations support coffee and exceptionally diverse cloud forest. That combination of tropical vegetation, orographic mist, sheer slopes, and precarious road identifies Bolivia's humid Andean transition.
