Grand Prismatic Spring's Living Color Rings — original illustration of Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone, USA

Grand Prismatic Spring's Living Color Rings is an original illustration set in Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone, USA. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is subarctic — long freezing winters, brief summers.

A vast circular hot spring fills the basin with a deep cobalt center, turquoise shallows and broad yellow, orange and rust microbial mats. Thin white steam drifts across only part of the pool, dark lodgepole pines frame the basin, and a narrow wooden boardwalk with tiny visitors supplies scale without cutting across the water.

Why do orange and green rings surround a deep blue hot spring?

Superheated groundwater rises freely through an open hydrothermal system, then cools outward from the spring's center. Different heat-loving microbial communities can survive at different temperatures, so their pigments form distinct color bands across the runoff mats while the hottest central water remains intensely blue. The treeless mineral apron and constant steam mark ground too hot and chemically active for the surrounding forest, turning temperature into a visible landscape pattern.
