Sandstone Arch over Wadi Rum's Red Desert
Wadi Rum, Jordan
Sandstone Arch over Wadi Rum's Red Desert is an original illustration set in Wadi Rum, Jordan. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is hot desert — evaporation far outruns rainfall.
A massive natural sandstone arch bridges two weathered towers above Wadi Rum's red-orange sand. Sheer dark-striped cliffs recede along the valley, a small black goat-hair tent and two camels supply scale, and wind-shaped ripples cross the open floor beneath a hard blue desert sky.
Why do giant arches and sheer towers stand above this red desert floor?
Thick sandstone was cut by vertical fractures that let water and weathering penetrate deep into the rock mass. Erosion widened weaker joints into gorges and cavities while stronger spans survived temporarily as arches and isolated towers. Sparse rainfall removes loosened material in sudden floods, and wind then redistributes sand across the broad valley floor. Monumental rock forms, clean red sediment and mobile pastoral shelter all follow from an arid landscape shaped by rare but forceful erosion.
