Vineyard Patch Slopes is an original illustration set in Burgundy, France. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.

A patchwork of vineyard parcels covers a slope, each ribbed like corduroy with its own row direction, in gold, russet and green. Low dry-stone walls divide them, and a small gate sits in one. The autumn evening light comes in almost level.

Why is one hillside divided into so many tiny parcels?

Parcels this small, each with its own row orientation and its own colour at the same moment, mean they are separately owned and separately managed — a landholding pattern of division by inheritance over centuries. Vines on a slope get drainage and low-angle sun; the walls hold the soil. The colour differences are variety and picking date.
