Narrow Canal House Row

Narrow Canal House Row is an original illustration set in Amsterdam Canal District, Netherlands. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.

Tall, extremely narrow brick houses line a canal, their varied neck and bell gables stepping along the waterfront. Large vertical windows stack in aligned bays. Small hoisting beams project from several gable peaks, and a few facades lean slightly forward.

Why do these houses lean out over the canal?

The forward lean is deliberate: goods were winched up the front by that beam, and tilting the wall keeps the load clear of the windows. Houses this narrow and deep, in brick, on a canal, describe a city built on trade where street frontage was scarce and expensive. Brick rather than stone means no local quarry — but excellent clay, and water to move it on.
