Tongkonan Roof Valley
Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi, Indonesia
Tongkonan Roof Valley is an original illustration set in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It lies in equatorial latitudes, where the climate is tropical rainforest — hot and wet all year.
A line of timber houses stands on posts above a lush highland clearing, each roof sweeping upward at both ends like an exaggerated boat. Red, black, cream, and ochre geometric panels face rice fields and bamboo, with mist-softened ridges enclosing the valley and water channels threading between intensely green plots.
Why do these houses lift dramatic roofs above a wet highland valley?
Because this equatorial upland receives abundant rain, steeply pitched overhanging roofs shed water quickly and protect carved timber façades from repeated wetting. Raised floors separate living space from damp ground and improve airflow, while nearby flooded rice plots occupy the gentler valley floor where water can be managed. The distinctive roof silhouettes, patterned fronts, humid vegetation, and terraced cultivation therefore connect architecture directly to South Sulawesi's climate and terrain.
