Tropical Housing Void Deck
Singapore Housing Estate
Tropical Housing Void Deck is an original illustration set in Singapore Housing Estate. It lies in equatorial latitudes, where the climate is tropical rainforest — hot and wet all year.
The entire ground floor is raised on regularly spaced concrete columns, leaving an open sheltered deck beneath. Above it, exterior corridors and small sunshades repeat across every floor, with rectangular ventilation openings near the ceilings. Everything is still wet from rain.
Why is the ground floor left open and empty?
Lifting the ground floor into an open deck gives shade, through-draught and a communal space that stays usable in a downpour — a direct answer to heat and sudden heavy rain. Exterior corridors keep circulation naturally ventilated. Vents above the doors let hot air escape without opening up the flat. This is public housing designed around a climate rather than in spite of it.
