Rainy Terrace Row is an original illustration set in Northern England. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.

An unbroken terrace of identical red-brick houses runs down a street, each with a bay window, and a marching row of chimneys along the roofline. Wet flagstone pavement mirrors the pale sky. The light is dim, even and directionless in steady drizzle.

Why are all the houses in the row identical?

Identical houses in an unbroken run were built as a single speculative project to house industrial workers close to their work — the uniformity is the point. One chimney stack per house, repeated down the whole row, dates the heating. Red brick means local clay, and permanently wet pavement under flat grey light means an oceanic climate with rain in every month.
