Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain
Stonehenge, Wiltshire, England
Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain is an original illustration set in Stonehenge, Wiltshire, England. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.
Stonehenge stands alone in rolling green chalk grassland as a compact circle of massive gray uprights capped by horizontal lintels. Several taller trilithons rise inside the outer ring, a low bank and ditch curve around the monument, and scattered round burial mounds remain visible on the treeless horizon beneath a cool open sky.
Why were these giant lintelled stones arranged on an open chalk plain?
The monument was assembled over generations within a much larger ceremonial landscape of avenues, earthworks and burial sites. Open chalk downland provided broad sightlines and a firm setting, while the carefully shaped lintels and joints created a durable architecture unlike ordinary stone rows. Its principal axis aligns with seasonal sunrise and sunset directions, connecting repeated gatherings to the annual solar cycle even though the complete meanings of the site remain unknown.
