The Colosseum curves across an open paved foreground, with stacked rows of dark arches cut into warm pale stone. Its outer wall survives to full height on one side and steps down into exposed inner rings on the other, while an umbrella pine rises beside the ancient masonry.

Why does this oval arena have repeated arches and an incomplete outer wall?

Repeated arches transfer loads into piers and distribute entrances around a large oval crowd enclosure. The uneven outline survives because earthquakes and centuries of stone removal stripped away sections of the outer structure, revealing the inner construction. Travertine arcade tiers, surviving brickwork, and the Mediterranean umbrella pine connect the ruin to Rome rather than to an intact modern stadium.
