Tiered Stave Church

Tiered Stave Church is an original illustration set in Western Norway. It lies in high latitudes, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.

A tiered wooden church rises in stacked steep roofs clad in dark scale-like shingles, carved dragon-head finials curling from the upper gables. Fresh-leaved birch stands around it, snow still lying on the ridges behind, in long spring evening light.

Why is this church built entirely in timber, with no masonry?

Stacking steep roofs sheds snow while keeping the load path in timber alone — no masonry anywhere, because stone was scarce and wood was not. Tarred shingles waterproof it against a very wet climate. Birch leafing out while snow remains on the tops marks a compressed spring at high latitude, where the valley floor warms weeks before the ridges.
