Sigiriya Citadel above the Jungle — original illustration of Sigiriya, Central Province, Sri Lanka

Sigiriya Citadel above the Jungle is an original illustration set in Sigiriya, Central Province, Sri Lanka. It lies in equatorial latitudes, where the climate is tropical monsoon — a short drier season inside a wet year.

Sigiriya rises abruptly above Sri Lanka's green forest as a single sheer red-brown rock with a broad flat summit. Small palace ruins line the top edge, a narrow stair climbs between the two giant lion-paw terraces, and long rectangular water gardens form a precise axis through the trees below.

Why was a royal citadel built on the summit of this isolated red rock?

The isolated rock is an erosion-resistant remnant that commands the surrounding plain and offers natural defense on nearly every side. Builders transformed its summit into a royal citadel and used galleries, stairways and a monumental lion gateway to control the difficult ascent. Below, symmetrical pools and channels organized water across the level approach, linking palace display to hydraulic planning in a monsoonal landscape where seasonal rain had to be stored and directed.
