Old Bund Facing the New Pudong Skyline
The Bund, Shanghai, China
Old Bund Facing the New Pudong Skyline is an original illustration set in The Bund, Shanghai, China. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is humid subtropical — hot summers, no dry season.
The Huangpu River separates two sharply different skylines. On one bank, a clock tower, domes and continuous pale stone façades line the Bund promenade; across the water, the Oriental Pearl Tower and a cluster of exceptionally tall glass towers rise from Pudong while ferries and barges cross the broad channel.
Why do historic stone banks face a futuristic skyline across one working river?
The river was Shanghai's commercial artery long before Pudong became a financial district, so the older banks and trading houses occupied the established western waterfront. Later development across the Huangpu had space for a new vertical center, turning opposite shores into a visible timeline. Constant ferry and cargo traffic confirms that this is still a working urban river, not a decorative basin, and explains why both business districts face the same water corridor.
