Sea Otters in a Kelp Bed
Aleutian Coast, Alaska, USA
Sea Otters in a Kelp Bed is an original illustration set in Aleutian Coast, Alaska, USA. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is subpolar oceanic — cool summers, few frosts.
Three otters float on their backs among broad amber-brown kelp ribbons in cold nearshore water. One holds a dark sea urchin on its chest. The kelp fronds lie flat across the surface, and grey headlands stand behind under overcast.
Why does a sea otter groom constantly?
Sea otters have no blubber — they survive cold water on fur density alone, which is why they groom constantly and float rather than swim. The urchin explains the kelp: otters eat urchins, urchins eat kelp, and where the otters go the forest goes with them. A dense surface canopy of kelp therefore means cold, nutrient-rich water and a predator still in place.
