Turf-Roofed Farmstead

Turf-Roofed Farmstead is an original illustration set in South Iceland. It lies in high latitudes, where the climate is subpolar oceanic — cool summers, few frosts.

Houses roofed and flanked in thick living turf merge into the hillside behind them. White-painted wooden gable fronts carry a row of small windows. A basalt cliff stands beyond, and the sun is still up late on a bright far-northern summer evening.

Why is only the gable built from timber?

Only the gable is timber because timber had to be imported; everything else is turf cut from the ground and stacked, which insulates far better than the thin walls a wood-poor island could afford. Small windows minimise heat loss. Grass growing on the roof at all means enough rain and enough summer warmth — cool and wet, not cold and dry.
