Why are these houses built directly on bare rock?

Houses set directly on rock with no foundation trench mean the soil is too thin to dig — glacially scraped bedrock. The stage on stilts is a working structure for landing and splitting fish over water. An iceberg this far south in late summer has come a long way on a cold current, which is also why the sea here stays frigid.
