Moai Facing Inland from a Stone Ahu
Ahu Tongariki, Rapa Nui, Chile
Moai Facing Inland from a Stone Ahu is an original illustration set in Ahu Tongariki, Rapa Nui, Chile. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is humid subtropical — hot summers, no dry season.
A long line of monumental gray-brown moai stands shoulder to shoulder on a fitted stone platform above the Rapa Nui coast. Their elongated heads face inland toward open volcanic grassland, one figure wears a red scoria topknot, and the broad cone of Poike rises beyond the low surf.
Why does this long row of stone ancestors face away from the ocean?
Rapa Nui communities erected moai on ceremonial platforms called ahu to embody ancestral authority over the settlements and fields before them. Most statues therefore face inland rather than out to sea, while their volcanic tuff bodies and occasional red scoria topknots came from different island quarries. The platform, aligned figures, treeless grassland and nearby volcanic form make an isolated Polynesian cultural landscape rather than a random sculpture row.
