Lone Ombu on the Pampas
Uruguay Pampas
Lone Ombu on the Pampas is an original illustration set in Uruguay Pampas. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is humid subtropical — hot summers, no dry season.
A single massive ombú stands alone on the horizon, its swollen sculptural base spreading into a broad low umbrella crown. Flat green grassland runs to every edge of the frame without a hill anywhere. A simple cattle fence recedes into the distance, and a small herd shows as dark dots far away.
Why does the ombú survive on grassland where trees cannot?
The ombú is not really a tree — it is a giant herb with a soft, water-storing trunk, which is why it survives on open grassland where fire and drought kill woody species. A single specimen standing alone was almost certainly planted for shade. Absolute flatness this complete, with deep grass and cattle, is temperate lowland grassland formed on thick wind-blown sediment.
