Tufa Cascades Linking Plitvice's Forest Lakes
Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
Tufa Cascades Linking Plitvice's Forest Lakes is an original illustration set in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.
A chain of emerald and turquoise lakes descends through dense beech and fir forest. Dozens of narrow white cascades pour over low pale tufa barriers draped in moss, submerged branches remain visible in the clear shallows, and a simple wooden footbridge curves above one lake edge without dominating the scene.
Why do clear forest lakes spill across so many pale natural dams?
The karst water carries dissolved calcium carbonate, which is released where flowing water meets air, plants and microbial surfaces. Layer by layer, that mineral coats mosses and debris to build porous tufa dams; each growing barrier impounds another lake and redirects overflow into fresh cascades. Forest cover helps regulate clean water and supplies the living surfaces on which deposition occurs, so lakes, mossy steps and waterfalls form a single system that continues to change.
