Why does an arid stony landscape suddenly become a carpet of flowers?

Namaqualand receives limited but relatively dependable cool-season rain, allowing annuals to germinate, flower, and set seed quickly before the ground dries again. Bulbs and succulents persist through longer droughts, while granite, soil depth, and small moisture differences create bands rather than a uniform garden. The sudden mass bloom within the Succulent Karoo is a brief seasonal response, not evidence of a generally wet climate.
