Dunes Meet the Ocean is an original illustration set in Namib Coast, Namibia. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is cold desert — arid, with freezing winters.

A sea of giant apricot dunes meets the ocean along a single white surf line, seen from high above. Knife-edged crests split each dune into a bright face and a shaded one. There is no vegetation anywhere between the sand and the water.

Why do these dunes run straight into the surf?

Dunes running straight into surf means the desert has no coastal plain — sand is delivered by the sea, blown inland, and the cycle never lets vegetation establish. Apricot colour is iron oxide accumulated over immense time. A coast this arid sits beside cold upwelling water: the air above it is too stable to rise and rain, so fog arrives instead.
