Horn-Ridged Great House

Horn-Ridged Great House is an original illustration set in West Sumatra, Indonesia. It lies in equatorial latitudes, where the climate is tropical rainforest — hot and wet all year.

A longhouse roof of black palm fibre sweeps up into several sharp buffalo-horn points. Gable panels are carved and painted in dense red-and-gold pattern. Rice terraces step away below, and forested volcanic slopes rise behind under bright late-morning light.

Why does the roof sweep up into points at each end?

The upswept roof points are structural as well as symbolic: the curve tensions the ridge and the deep overhang throws heavy rain far from the timber walls. Palm-fibre thatch is durable in constant humidity where wood shingles would rot. A great house of this scale, raised on posts above rice land, marks a settled highland society on volcanic soil.
