Flooded Cranberry Harvest
Southeastern Massachusetts, USA
Flooded Cranberry Harvest is an original illustration set in Southeastern Massachusetts, USA. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is hot-summer humid continental.
Rectangular bogs become broad crimson pools during autumn harvest, with millions of floating berries gathered into curved booms by workers in chest waders. Sandy embankments divide the plots, pine and red maple woods surround the wetland, and a small pump channel links the flooded beds.
Why do crimson cranberries float across rectangular autumn bogs?
Because ripe cranberries contain internal air pockets, growers can flood a prepared bog and mechanically loosen the fruit so it rises to the surface for collection. Level diked beds allow water to be added and recovered efficiently, while acidic sandy soils and a cool humid climate suit the low evergreen vines. The floating red crop, geometric basins, and New England woodland therefore show a harvest method shaped by both berry anatomy and wetland engineering.
