Koutoubia above Jemaa el-Fna
Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakesh, Morocco
Koutoubia above Jemaa el-Fna is an original illustration set in Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakesh, Morocco. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is hot semi-arid steppe.
Koutoubia's tall square minaret rises above the broad open space of Jemaa el-Fna, with restrained geometric panels, a small lantern and copper spheres. Low red-ochre walls, canvas market canopies, palms, horse carts and clustered human silhouettes fill the foreground, while pale snow-touched Atlas peaks appear beyond the flat city.
Why does one square minaret dominate this low, ochre city at the Atlas edge?
Traditional construction uses local earth-toned finishes and remains mostly low, so the minaret functions as a visual and spiritual landmark across the medina. Jemaa el-Fna occupies a large irregular opening beside the maze of covered lanes, concentrating trade, food and performance where crowds can gather. Irrigated palms soften an otherwise dry plateau, and the distant High Atlas supplies both a geographic backdrop and much of the water that makes this oasis-like city possible.
