Ore Train under the Northern Lights
Kiruna Region, Swedish Lapland
Ore Train under the Northern Lights is an original illustration set in Kiruna Region, Swedish Lapland. It lies in the polar circle, where the climate is subarctic — long freezing winters, brief summers.
A heavy dark ore train moves through snowy birch tundra beneath low rounded mountains. White-barked trees stand widely spaced across deep blue shadows, red-brown mineral wagons trail behind an electric locomotive, and a restrained green aurora arcs through the polar night above the distant mine landscape. Snow and sky dominate, but the long industrial train remains clearly readable.
Why does an Arctic railway run mainly for ore, not passengers?
The wagons are built for dense ore because Kiruna's railway exists primarily to move mineral output toward ice-free Atlantic shipping, so heavy freight rather than local passenger traffic defines the line. Birch replaces tall conifers because cold, wind and a short growing season push the forest toward its northern and upper limit. Auroras are frequent at this latitude because the region lies beneath the high-latitude magnetic oval. Iron-mining infrastructure, sparse mountain birch and winter aurora combine in Swedish Lapland around Kiruna.

Part of Railways and terrain — A railway cannot argue with a gradient, so its alignment is a survey of the terrain it crosses.
